Development of Solarized Light Theme for the App
User Story:
As a user who prefers light color schemes, I would like the app to include a Solarized Light theme option based on Ethan Schoonover's Solarized color specifications, so that I can enjoy the app's interface with a lighter, eye-friendly color palette.
Acceptance Criteria:
- The Solarized Light theme is available in the app's theme settings, accurately reflecting Schoonover's design.
- The color palette for the Solarized Light theme uses the specified shades and contrasts as defined at Ethan Schoonover's Solarized webpage.
- There is a clear and seamless switch between the existing Solarized Dark theme and the new Solarized Light theme within the app settings.
- The Solarized Light theme is applied consistently across all app elements, including menus, headers, footers, and content areas.
- Text readability and interface element visibility are tested and ensured, with adjustments made to accommodate the lighter color scheme where necessary.
- The implementation of the theme should not affect the app's performance or responsiveness.
Attached are the Solarized color scheme specifications.

Solarized Color Schemes rendered
Here is a comparison of the Solarized Dark and Solarized Light color schemes:
Solarized Dark | Solarized Light | |
---|---|---|
Base03 | #002b36 | #002b36 |
Base02 | #073642 | #073642 |
Base01 | #586e75 | #586e75 |
Base00 | #657b83 | #657b83 |
Base0 | #839496 | #839496 |
Base1 | #93a1a1 | #93a1a1 |
Base2 | #eee8d5 | #eee8d5 |
Base3 | #fdf6e3 | #fdf6e3 |
Yellow | #b58900 | #b58900 |
Orange | #cb4b16 | #cb4b16 |
Red | #dc322f | #dc322f |
Magenta | #d33682 | #d33682 |
Violet | #6c71c4 | #6c71c4 |
Blue | #268bd2 | #268bd2 |
Cyan | #2aa198 | #2aa198 |
Green | #859900 | #859900 |
As you can see, the color values are the same for both color schemes, but the way they are used differs. In the Solarized Dark scheme, the darker colors (Base03, Base02) are typically used for background, and the lighter colors (Base2, Base3) for text and other foreground elements. The opposite is true for the Solarized Light scheme.
Recommendations:
-
Solarized Dark: This theme is recommended for low-light environments or for extended periods of coding to reduce eye strain. It's also known to be battery-saving on OLED displays, where dark colors consume less power.
-
Solarized Light: This theme is recommended for well-lit environments where a darker theme might be harder to read. It can also be a good option if you prefer lighter themes or find that they cause less eye strain.
